Την 14η Ιουνίου 1971 το power trio των Emerson, Lake & κυκλοφόρησε τον δεύτερο δίσκο του με τίτλο "Tarkus".

Αποτελεί την εμπορικότερες δουλειά του γκρουπ καθώς πάτησε στην κορυφή των βρετανικών charts, ενώ στις ΗΠΑ έφτασε στο νούμερο 9.

Το μεγαλύτερο σε διάρκεια κομμάτι τους, χωρίζεται σε 7 μέρη και εξιστορεί τις περιπέτειες ενός tank, ονομαζόμενο Tarkus, όπως αυτό που είναι σχεδιασμένο στο εξώφυλλο.
