Ο David Knopfler (συνθέτης, τραγουδιστής, κιθαρίστας, πιανίστας, παραγωγός δίσκων, ποιητής και συγγραφέας) γεννήθηκε το 1952 στη Γλασκόβη αλλά μεγάλωσε στο Newcastle . Είναι ο μικρότερος αδελφός του Mark, στου οποίου τη σκιά έχει παραμείνει αναφορικά με τη συμμετοχή του στους Dire Straits.
