Ο Joe McDonald και ο E.D. (Ο Eugene Denson, φίλος/μάνατζερ του συγκροτήματος) κάθονταν έξω από το εξοχικό του E.D. στο Μπέρκλεϋ προσπαθώντας να βρουν ένα όνομα για το γκρουπ. Καθώς και οι δύο είχαν επαναστατικές τάσεις, ήθελαν ένα όνομα που να αντικατοπτρίζει την πολιτική τους θέση. Ξεφυλλίζοντας το «Μικρό κόκκινο βιβλίο» του Προέδρου Μάο Τσε Τουνγκ όταν ο E.D. βρήκε τη φράση, «Ο επαναστάτης είναι ένα ψάρι που κολυμπά στη θάλασσα του λαού». Από αυτό προήλθε το «Country Mao and the Fish». Αλλά ο Τζο είπε ότι μπορεί να προκαλέσει σύγχυση καθώς η Αμερική δεν αναγνώρισε την Κόκκινη Κίνα. Έτσι, ο E.D. πρότεινε το «Country Joe and the Fish», με τον Joe να είναι ο Josef Stalin.
